The share of discounters in the structure of the major Belarusian retail chains was 21%, of convenience stores – 32%, of hypermarkets – 29%, of supermarket – 17% in 2011, according to the experts.
In Russia supermarkets represent the largest trade sector, their share is 34% of all floorspace. The share of discounters is 35% of all floorspace, of hypermarket – 25%, cash and carry warehouses – 6%. Convenience stores almost disappeared in the Russian Federation at present.
As for the major Middle European retail chains structure, the largest share belongs to supermarkets, hypermarkets occupy 26% of floorspace, the share of discounters is 22%, of cash and carry warehouses – 8%, of convenience stores – 4%.
According to EnterInvest’s experts the number of discounters in Belarus increased 10 times more within last 4 years. At the same Evroopt retail chain owns the great number of discounters in Belarus (over 80%).
The number of supermarkets was growing not so quickly, however it increase 3 times more.
"It’s also necessary to consider that hypermarket are focused on the cities where personal income is quite high and, therefore, their development is more limited in Belarus compared with the discounters which are actively developed not only in Minsk and other regional centers but in district centers and towns", EnterInvest survey says.
Minsk and other regional centers have all possibilities to increase the number of trade facilities, except Vitebsk, where the number of floorspace is the largest in the country and reaches 512sq. meters per 1000 of inhabitants with the average number of floorspace of 400 sq. meters per 1000 inhabitants in Belarus, according to the experts’ estimates.
District centers also have a potential to increase trade facilities and more of them reached the republican average number of floorspace. The experts considers that the regional centers can increase the average number of floorspace in the country which is expected to reach 600 sq. meters per 1000 inhabitants by 2015, according to the Ministry of Trade forecast.
Discounters are expected to be the most prospective for development in the regional center as they do not impose specific requirements for areas. Discounters may be established due to the purchase of small retail chains and of neighborhood retailers operating at the moment of purchase and their further reorientation enabling Companies to cut capital expenditures. Besides, discounters do not impose any specific requirements to personal income, on the contrary they are focused on buyers whose income is low or average.
